Content Creator Murugi Munyi says she made Sh10 million from content creation in 2023.
That’s Sh833,333 a month if she had a day job. Munyi quit her 9-5 job five years ago to become a full-time content creator.
She says, that although content creation is a lucrative venture, there are always dry months.
“I wouldn’t probably know how much exactly I made last year, but my assistant Nancy, tells me the figures stood at 10 million. But as a content creator that doesn’t mean you are making money every month. There are dry months when companies and brands are not spending or don’t have their budgets out yet,” Munyi explains.
Munyi then adds;
“You could make Sh200,000 this month and probably go dry the next then make Sh1.3 million the month after, the next you do Sh400,000, and so on. The earnings you make are kind of cyclical”
Before starting her content creation career, Murugi worked at British American Tobacco (BAT). She quit because she and her husband worked in the same department as her, a situation that became uncomfortable for them with time.
As a couple, they decided that she be the one to quit the job as her husband’s position offered more money.
She would later join RedHouse PR agency where she was taking home a monthly salary of Sh200,000.
“It was fantastic because I was earning Sh200,000 and I have a man (financially stable), it was really good. Speaking within the context of marriage I feel having a (financially stable) man, offers a certain level of financial security where he is financially responsible for my needs and taking care of me. With such a husband I could afford to quit a job and know while I am out there finding another, I am not going to sleep on the streets. You know a good support system,” Murugi argues
.
Munyi would later leave for portpesa where her salary skyrocketed to Sh350,000 a month. She however quit after two years due to family reasons and later on started creating content.
