The owner of Mwinyonjo FM has spoken out about the ordeal he went through when armed robbers staged a daring robbery at the studio.

In a video captured by CCTV cameras, three suspected robbers armed with machetes and guns entered the studio before making demands.

Mr Robert Njuguna, a presenter working at the time, said he thought the three were police officers.

“When they came into the studio, I wondered what the police officers were doing here because this has never happened before,” said Mr Njuguna.

Mr Njuguna said that when two more entered the studio with machetes and guns, he was at a loss for words and decided to follow their orders.

All six presenters in the studio were then ordered to lie flat on the floor and hand over all their money and mobile phones.

Mr Njuguna said the suspected robbers harassed them for more than 30 minutes before they left.

Mr Dan Kamau, the studio manager, said the suspected robbers called him and demanded that he show them where the CCTV cameras were being controlled from.

“I told them I wasn’t involved with CCTV cameras, but they still threatened to shoot me,” recounts Mr. Kamau. “I had no option but to comply and let them do as they wished.”

The suspected robbers then proceeded to destroy the CCTV cameras and their storage.

Ms Esther Wanjiru, a presenter, said that when the robbers asked her for money, she said she did not have any but that there was cash at the reception.

She recounted, “Upon informing them that the money was kept at the reception, they instructed us to enter and lie down. Afterward, they demanded us to reveal the amount of money we had on our phones.”
