The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Nairobi County Chapter has partnered with the Boda Boda Association of Nairobi to tackle the growing number of accidents involving motorcycle taxis and to foster a supportive business environment for the riders. This collaboration was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Wednesday.
Maxwell Okoth, Chairman of the KNCCI Nairobi County Health Sector, highlighted that the partnership aims to address the significant challenges faced by boda boda riders, who play a crucial role in Nairobi’s economy. The Kenya Chamber of Commerce’s Healthcare Committee will offer first aid training to the riders, with the hope of reducing accidents and saving lives. He called on Kenyans to support the initiative.
Alex Kulema, Chairman of the Boda Boda Association of Nairobi, expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the partnership brings much-needed assistance to the industry. The focus will be on training boda boda riders to improve safety, in response to alarming statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), which reports around 11,500 crashes involving boda bodas annually.
KNCCI Nairobi County Chairman James Mwaura underscored the importance of ongoing training and collaboration, stressing that the boda boda sector has long been neglected, contributing to the high accident rates.
The initiative will begin with first aid training for riders, equipping them with essential skills to reduce fatalities and injuries. Additional healthcare services for the riders and their families will follow in later phases.
KNCCI, a membership-based organization, advocates for a favorable trade and investment environment, supporting enterprise growth and protecting the commercial interests of Kenya’s business community.
