Ahead of the planned OccupyCBD demonstration on Tuesday, most shops in the Nairobi Central Business District were observed to be closed. Streets were patrolled by police as preparations for the protests continued.

Activist Boniface Mwangi confirmed on Monday that the peaceful protests would proceed as scheduled until the government took responsibility for the deaths of protesters. He emphasized the need for tangible actions from the government, such as an apology from the President to the families of the deceased.

The government has acknowledged that at least 25 protesters died during the demonstrations, although the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported a higher death toll of 41 and 360 injuries. The protests by Gen Z began on June 18 and June 25, 2024, with demonstrators initially occupying the National Assembly.
