Nairobi County Government will partner with Hennessy and Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) to identify partners who would sponsor four basketball teams in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) leagues.
This was announced during the official opening of the newly refurbished basketball court in Jericho estate at the weekend.
“On behalf of Governor Sakaja, it is my pleasure this afternoon to once again be part of this noble cause of launching the Jericho basketball court. This facility will benefit at least five sub counties, namely Makadara, Embakasi South, Embakasi West, Kamukunji, and Starehe.
World renowned cognac brand Hennessy will also aim to improve, equip, and engage communities from the informal settlement to take up basketball. Who knows, Nairobi might produce the first NBA or WNBA player. We are working closely with Hennessy, to ensure that the people of Nairobi benefit. We appreciate the immense support,” said Brian Mulama, County Executive for Talent, Skills and Care.
He added: “This partnership will not only bring dignity to this area as the youth will have a decent basketball pitch to play and train on. It will also provide a huge opportunity for them to excel and get scouted by local, regional, and international scouts.”
Speaking at the event the County Executive for Innovation and Digital Economy Mike Gumo said it was encouraging to see partners like Hennessy coming on board and partnering with the county.
“I want to appreciate the support you have given the Sports sector and will be looking forward to partnering with you in the digital space. We are keen on forming partnerships with organisations like Hennessy because such a facility ensures that public spaces where children and young adults can learn and practice sound skills,” he said
