A man who reportedly physically and verbally abused a police officer stationed at the Drive Inn Police Post in Roysambu, Nairobi has been charged with assault and offensive conduct.
Erick Ochieng is said to have committed the offences on October 8, 2023 after making his way to the said police post to inquire about a report he had previously filed at the precinct.
Ochieng sought swift resolution of the case but the officer manning the desk, Corporal Peter Karanja, informed him that investigations into the report had yet to be finalised therefore the suspect implicated in the incident could not be arrested yet.
Corporal Karanja’s remarks are said to have irked Ochieng, who reportedly caused a scene at the police post, according to a report by the Nation newspaper.
The officer attempted to de-escalate the situation by leaving Ochieng be, but the accused reportedly barred him from leaving the desk before injuring him with a door.
Following the incident, Ochieng was reportedly placed into custody by Karanja’s colleagues after members of the public who were at the scene raised alarm.
The police officer was later rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment.
Appearing before Makadara Law Court Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi on Thursday, Ochieng denied the charges and was released on a Ksh.40,000 cash bail.
The case will be mentioned on November 28 while the trial date has been set for March 13, 2024.
