Nairobi – More than 400 mothers turned out at Riruta Level 4 Hospital on Thursday, October 8, 2026, for a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Open Day designed to bring essential health information directly to families in the community.

The event was jointly organised by the hospital, White Ribbon Alliance Kenya, Britam Insurance, and the M-PESA Foundation, transforming the facility into a centre of learning and community engagement for the day.

What Happened at the MCH Open Day

Attendees took part in interactive sessions covering child nutrition, breastfeeding practices, and family planning. Healthcare workers demonstrated how to prepare nutritionally balanced meals for young children, explained best breastfeeding practices from birth, and outlined the reproductive health options available at the facility.

The sessions gave mothers the opportunity to raise questions and share experiences with both health professionals and fellow parents.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Facility Manager Alice Ndwiga highlighted the significance of making health information accessible to mothers at the grassroots level.

“Many mothers want to do the best for their children, but they sometimes lack the right information or a safe space to ask. Today we wanted to bring that knowledge closer to them, and to show them that the hospital is a friend, not a place to fear. When a mother is well informed, the whole family benefits,” Ndwiga said.

Mothers also received gifts during the event, lending a celebratory tone to the proceedings alongside the educational content. Participants left equipped with practical guidance on supporting their children’s development, managing their own health, and making informed reproductive choices.

Follow-Up Support Through Community Health Promoters

The initiative will not conclude with the single open day. Community Health Promoters (CHPs) are scheduled to continue conducting home visits to reinforce the information shared during the sessions and to link mothers with available community health services.

The MCH Open Day reflects Riruta Level 4 Hospital’s broader commitment to preventive healthcare and maternal education as tools for building healthier families across the community.
