A family in Kaptumo location, Aldai constituency, Nandi county, is demanding justice after a teacher brutalised and fractured their child’s left arm in school.
According to the family, Elsy Jelimo, a Grade 7 pupil at Keburo Primary School, sustained serious injuries after being flogged by one of her teachers identified as Cosmas for making noise in class last month.
The pupil was admitted to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital on June 16, 2023, for treatment after the horrific incident.
“Teacher Cosmas gave me several strokes of the cane on claims of making noise in class. He also hit me on the hand causing it to fracture. I felt a lot of pain and was not able to concentrate in class until I got home and was taken to hospital,” the minor said.
Amos Rotich, a brother to the pupil, said his sibling came home and informed him that she had been severely punished.
Glady Jeptum, the mother of the victim, said her daughter told her she was beaten after being reported to have made noise in class.
Jeptum said she got a P3 form and took her daughter to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital where she was treated.
“My daughter cannot do anything using her left hand also her body parts are sore. I have reported the matter to Kaptumo Police Station where I expect the law to take its course,” Jeptum added.
The mother, who comes from a humble background, is now appealing for justice for her kid as corporal punishment is outlawed in the country.
Meanwhile, Nandi County Education Director Harrison Muriuki Wakaba has promised that the investigations will be conducted and appropriate action taken against the teacher in question.
“Corporal punishment was banned a long time ago by the government. No single teacher is not aware of such acts against a pupil. We have the matter reported in my desk; we will deal with it to the end,” Muriuki noted.
The county education boss further said he would share the same matter with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for further disciplinary action.
