Former Nyeri Town MP Wambugu Ngunjiri has come out at the Democracy for Citizens Party Leader, Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of being behind major efforts to break the Jubilee Party after the 2022 general elections.

According to the legislator, the former Deputy President, Gachagua, has had issues with the former ruling party before, citing competition in the Mount Kenya region kingship.

Ngunjiri, who made his remarks on Monday, October 6, 2025, accused Gachagua of trying to sabotage Jubilee because of its strong dominance in the Mount Kenya region, where, according to Ngunjiri, Gachagua feared losing relevance in the region.

“The person who wanted Jubilee vanquished is the person who did not want Jubilee to go back to being a dominant party in the Mount Kenya region,” Ngunjiri said.

Likewise, the former MP, who also worked in the office of the then former Deputy President, revealed that Gachagua has been having a series of issues with the former ruling party for a while now.

“Today, you’re able to see who that was, Rigathi Gachagua. I mean, he’s the one who’s having a problem with Jubilee now because Jubilee is getting into a domain that he believes is his exclusively,” he added.

Ngunjiri questions Gachagua and Matiangi’s woes

Former Nyeri Town MP Wambugu Ngunjiri recently questioned why former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua appears to be increasingly uneasy about former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

In a statement shared on his social media pages on Saturday, October 4, 2025, Gachagua may be unsettled by Matiang’i’s calm and calculated approach to politics, which contrasts sharply with his own style.

He also suggested that Matiang’i’s ability to move freely and attract support in the Mount Kenya region without Gachagua’s influence could be another source of tension.

“Something about Matiangi is really scaring Gachagua. Could it be the calm, sober mind with silent moves, all of which are the very opposite of who Gachagua is? Or is it the fact that Matiangi can go anywhere in Mt Kenya without his permission?” Wambugu stated.

Worth noting, this comes at a time when a power struggle seems to be emerging within the United Opposition.
