The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will soon be known as National Social Health Insurance Fund (NSHIF), health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Susan Nakhumicha has confirmed.

This comes barely months after the government agency changed its name from the National Hospital Insurance Fund to the previous title.

CS Nakhumicha says the move comes as part of the commitments to reform the national health insurer.

Currently, the fund is undergoing a series of regulatory and legal reforms to enhance sustainability.

NHIF

Last year, NHIF board chairman Lewis Nguyai announced that the name change was aiming to include organisations that had renal dialysis centres, diabetic care centres and cancer care centres.

“What we have done is we have looked at a holistic approach towards healthcare delivery. It is not only hospitals that are responsible for providing healthcare. With that, I believe we will now be able to have a further reach and be able to extend towards 100 per cent of Kenyans having healthcare benefits,” he stated.

At the time, former health CS Mutahi Kagwe formed an expert panel to identify the key issues of reforms to ensure that the government agency caters to the needs of its beneficiaries.
