The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed that the main suspect in the gruesome murder of Nairobi Hospital Finance chief Eric Maigo is fit to stand trial.

A detective involved in the matter on Wednesday, October 11, said that Anne Adhiambo Akinyi, the prime suspect is an adult of sound mind contrary to earlier reports that she might have been a minor.

This was revealed on Wednesday after she underwent an age and mental assessment which was conducted at Mathari Hospital in Nairobi, which affirmed she is an adult.

Adhiambo was presented before the court on a miscellaneous application on September 27, where the court granted the prosecution 21 days to hold her pending conclusion of investigations.

Sources close to the investigation have disclosed that the age and mental assessment results will be presented before the court at the end of these 21 days.

She had been on the run since Maigo was found dead on September 15 and was cornered in Kibera slums by detectives attached to the DCI.

Following her arrest, Nairobi County police boss Adamson Bungei said she spent the night at Muthaiga Police Station but was to be transferred to Kilimani Police Station.

Police say the girl sat for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams in an approved school located in Dagoretti, Nairobi County.

She was named as the main suspect by the police after she was captured on CCTV footage escaping from Maigo’s home located in Woodley Estate by scaling the perimeter wall.

Maigo’s lifeless body was found in a pool of blood on September 15, with officials confirming that he was stabbed 25 times. The motive is yet to be known.

Detectives recovered clothes believed to have been worn by the main suspect during the murder of Maigo.

Adhiambo, who has already recorded a statement with the police, is expected back in court on October 28.

Initially, police had arrested Ms Cynthia Lusenga Andalo as a suspect. She was arraigned in Nairobi but was freed after evidence showed that she was not at the scene of a crime when Maigo was killed.
