A National Police Reserve (NPR) officer in Meru County has been shot dead by bandits alleged to be notorious Turkana rustlers.
The officer was caught in a shootout while trying to recover 48 stolen cattle from the Tigania community.
Reports indicate the officer was part of the Meru Conservancy team on a mission to rescue one herder from the Tigania community who was raided and his 48 cows stolen.
They managed to rescue the herder and 26 cows before the bandits overpowered them.
Herders have criticised both Tigania East OCS and Tigania West OCS for failing to give reinforcement even after calling for support.
This comes as police in Tigania have been accused of colluding with criminals and are calling on Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki to transfer reluctant officers especially the OCSs in Tigania East and Tigania West.
The herders want new officers who are not linked to criminals and drug traffickers to help them tackle the rising insecurity.
