Residents of Nyaribari Chache Constituency in Kisii county told off their Member of Parliament (MP) Zaheer Jhanda after he asked them not to take part in Azimio demos held today July 19, 2023.

The first-time MP, who was elected on a UDA party ticket, was attempting to calm an agitated crowd in Kisii which was hit by violent protests last week.

Jhanda was in a convoy of three vehicles when he addressed the restive crowd that had gathered.

Crackdown

Police cordoned off Kisii CBD today after the town witnessed violent demos last week as protesters lit bonfires and engaged security personnel in running battles.

Nine people, including two county law enforcement officers and two university students, were charged in court for taking part in the anti-government protests in Kisii last week.

Kisii Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Ann Ojwando on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, appealed to residents to steer clear of anti-government demonstrations scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week.

Speaking at a public baraza at Daraja Mbili market, Ojwando said the residents should continue focusing on their daily activities instead of blocking roads and destroying property during the protests.

“Every resident in the area should reflect on whether participating in weekly protests will earn them income since work will be disrupted. Instead, they should prioritise their daily work and take time to rest during the weekend,” she said.
