Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has sent a message of condolence to families of those killed in the Kachok accident on Tuesday.

The number of the dead was yet to be established by press time. Nyong’o described the accident as horrifying and asked the police and Ministry of Transport to find a lasting solution to frequent deadly accidents at the Kachok flyover.

He said stiff measures need to be taken even if it means barring lorries weighing over 10 tonnes from using the flyover.

Samuel Odera, a witness, said he was behind the lorry at the time of the accident.

He it appeared like the driver of the lorry lost control before the vehicle veering off the flyover.

Odera claimed that the flyover has sharp bends with low pavements that makes it hard for vehicles to negotiate the overpass.

Other residents who spoke to the Star said that it was about time a permanent solution was found to the frequent accidents at the spot.

“This is not the first time, in previous accidents people have been lucky that when the lorries veer off and fall on the other side of the road, normally there are no people. But our fears today came to pass when it fell on a tuk tuk carrying passengers and smashed it” Michael Oluoch said.

But as the police were trying to remove the wreckage, residents surrounded the area as others tried to loot boots from the lorry.

Police had to lob teargas canisters in the air to disperse the crowd and secure the goods from looters.

In the ensuing fiasco, a woman fell in a ditch and broke one of her legs from the knee.

Police are still at the scene trying to tow the wreckage.
