Equity Dumas head coach Carrey Odhiambo praised the organizers of the Eliud Owalo Foundation Invitational Tournament, held over the weekend at the Ulinzi Sports Complex and Nyayo Gymnasium. Despite the Dumas’ 80-71 loss to Nairobi City Thunder in the final, Odhiambo acknowledged the event’s successful assembly of elite men’s and women’s clubs from the Kenya National Basketball Premier Leagues for the three-day competition.
“The tournament was the best I have participated in recent times, it was well organized, the legends were well appreciated. It created an atmosphere that builds towards the playoffs,” noted Odhiambo.
“It was great preparation, it helped us see what we need to do moving forward and changes we need to make as we play this game,” he added.
The soft-spoken tactician also praised his boys for their great improvement during the tournament, but admitted there is a lot more that needs to be done.
“Our team really showed character, heart and everything else that needs to be done. We just need to be sharp offensively which will make us a better team moving forward.”
“The tournament has really made us see the areas which we need to work on, especially the offensive end and offensive organization, shot selection and small things that we need to correct and move on. My boys have really improved and we are going to set higher expectations for ourselves,” said Odhiambo.
Despite not clinching the title, Odhiambo says he will take home some valuable lessons.
“We need to take every position seriously in the game of basketball, we cannot allow ourselves to make critical mistakes in the last minutes of the game,” he averted.
“We need to concentrate on the whole game. Otherwise the game was fine apart from the shots that we missed, things can happen but we need to stay up to it the whole game,” Odhiambo added.
Equity Dumas took home Ksh. 200,000, after finishing first runners-up in the men’s category.
