The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have received the largest portions of the political parties’ allocation in Kenya. According to a Kenya Gazette notice dated Friday, September 27, 2024, UDA, led by President William Ruto, is set to receive Ksh558 million, while ODM will be allocated Ksh298 million for the 2024/25 financial year.
Ann Nderitu, the Registrar of Political Parties, stated that 48 parties are eligible for funding in this financial year. “In exercise of the powers conferred by sections 23, 25, and 34 (b) of the Political Parties Act, 2011, and Regulation 6 (c) of the Political Parties (Funding) Regulations, 2019, the Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that the following forty-eight (48) political parties are eligible to receive funds from the Political Parties Fund (PPF) during the Financial Year 2024/2025,” the notice read.
These funds are intended to support the parties’ operations and activities throughout the year. Other notable allocations include Ksh69 million for the Wiper Democratic Movement, led by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, and Ksh130 million for the Jubilee Party.
Martha Karua’s National Rainbow Coalition-Kenya (Narc-Kenya) will receive Ksh7 million, while the Kenya African National Union (KANU) will get Ksh23 million. The Amani National Congress (ANC), associated with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, is set to receive Ksh25 million, and the Safina Party, linked to Jimi Wanjigi, will get Ksh3 million. Maendeleo Chap Chap, led by Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, will receive Ksh12 million.
According to the notice, the allocated funds will be distributed quarterly, pending receipt from the National Treasury. As outlined in Section 25 of the Political Parties Act, 95 percent of the fund is distributed based on the total number of votes each party received in the preceding general election, with the remaining 5 percent allocated for administrative expenses. Notably, parties that fail to secure at least 5 percent of the total votes in the previous election will not receive funding.
