Siaya Governor James Orengo has called for President William Ruto to resign, citing widespread public dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza government. Orengo argued that if President Ruto were attuned to the public sentiment, he would step down, as many Kenyans are discontented with the current administration.

“If Ruto was listening to the mood of Kenyans. Talking to him will not resolve anything; there is too much anger against the Kenya Kwanza administration. If he is truly a Christian, he should just resign with this entire government,” Orengo said on Sunday.

Speaking in Bondo, the governor stated that in his estimation, the entire Kenya Kwanza government has failed Kenyans, made them angry and that it should to vacate office in its entirety.

“We can have international institutions to assist us, just like 2002 and 2007, to bring new processes that will enable our transition from this autocratic government to a new dispensation,” Orengo added.

Following the withdrawal of the unpopular 2024 Finance Bill after deadly nationwide protests, Orengo commented that Kenyans must prepare for challenging times ahead. He noted that government services are likely to see significant reductions. President Ruto, in a media roundtable at State House Nairobi, painted a grim outlook for the country’s future, emphasizing that Kenya’s progress has regressed by two years.

He stated that to sustain government operations, Kenya will need to borrow at least Ksh.1.2 trillion this year. Ruto highlighted that without the revenue expected from the Finance Bill, the government cannot proceed with plans such as confirming 46,000 Junior Secondary School teachers on permanent and pensionable contracts. The 2024 Finance Bill had proposed increased taxation as part of Ruto’s efforts to generate an additional Ksh.346.7 billion for the 2024/25 budget.
