Panic after villager stabs assistant chief

Tension has gripped Muharia village in Sabatia sub-county, Vihiga county, after an assistant chief was attacked by a villager who went berserk.

The man also injured the other three people by stabbing them with a knife in an unprovoked attack.

The assistant chief of Kigama sub-location, Moses Marani, is fighting for his life at Kaimosi Jumuia hospital after he sustained serious injuries during the attack.

The incident was confirmed by the North Maragoli location chief, Kennedy Ndagala.

Chief Ndagala, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, said the assistant chief was attacked by a mentally disturbed man who stabbed him several times on the head and hands, inflicting serious injuries on his body.

“We have an incident that happened at Muharia village in Kigama sub-location, where a man went berserk and stabbed an assistant chief and three other villagers with a knife. The administrator was taken to Kaimosi hospital, while the other three were rushed to Vihiga Referral hospital. The man is suspected to be mentally ill,” said Chief Ndagala.

The assailant was arrested by police officers who responded immediately to save the situation.

The man is being held at the Mudete police station.

“The man has been arrested and is being held at Mudete police station,” Chief Ndagala said.

Ndagala said they are trying to find out what prompted the man to stab villagers, including the assistant chief.

He said police have already launched investigations and are holding the suspect for interrogation.

“Police are holding the suspect for interrogation to establish what really transpired,” Ndagala said.
