The Government has commenced a fresh crackdown to rid the Immigration Department of corrupt officials.

In a statement, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki noted that Kenyans continue to experience pain and frustration as they seek passports to facilitate their movement due to individuals soliciting bribes from citizens working in cahoots with Immigration officials.

On Friday, CS Kindiki said those found culpable will consequently be held personally accountable by prosecution and surcharged.

“Beginning this morning, a crackdown has been commenced to identify all corrupt officials. Those found culpable will be removed from service, and held personally accountable by prosecution and surcharged,” the Interior CS said.

“Many years of low investment in the passport production infrastructure, piling supplier debts, and corrupt practices continue to undermine the Government’s program initiated last year to transform the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services,” he added.

Kindiki further said the Government is committed to conclusively resolve the challenges surrounding passport issuance and settle outstanding supplier debts.
