The autopsy on the body of the slain Albert Ojwang’ will be conducted at 2pm, Monday June 9, following arrangements by parties involved in the unexplained case.

Family lawyer Julius Juma said the postmortem examination, which was supposed to take place in the morning, could not take place due to pending plans.

He said several law practitioners have expressed interest in probing the incident to unearth what led to the mysterious death of Ojwang’ while in police custody.

The lawyer was speaking at Nairobi funeral home, where a troop of activists had gathered as they pushed for accountability and justice for the bereaved family.

The activists have partially disrupted the transport operations at the Nairobi funeral home roundabout, condemning the act.

During a Monday morning address, Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja revealed that Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service (DIG) Eliud Kipkoech Lagat is the complainant behind Ojwang’s arrest.

He had been arrested at his home in Homa Bay County on Saturday afternoon and transferred to Nairobi, where he met his death on Sunday.

Ojwang’ was reportedly found unconscious inside his cell at Central Police Station and was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A police report claimed that he was found with head injuries “by hitting his head severally against the wall inside the cell.”

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) have launched a probe on the matter and investigative teams have already visited the crime scene.

Officers manning the Central Polcie Station at the time of Ojwang’s booking have been interdicted, pending further interrogation.

Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for the suspension of DIG Lagat.
