Police in Uganda have arrested a woman who was captured on video allegedly forcing her four-year-old stepson to eat his faeces.

Esther Nabirye, 26, was apprehended on Monday after the video, which had already gone viral, caused an uproar from the public prompting the police to take action.

Confirming the arrest, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said that Nabirye is already in police custody and charges of child torture have been filed against her.

He further lauded the neighbours who were swift to film the woman, condemning the heinous act which he labelled as inhumane and barbaric.

“As we talk she (Nabirye) is under our custody at Jinja Central Police Station and we have opened a case of child torture and abuse against Nabirie. We want to thank the neighbours because we were able to move in very fast, that was an act of courage,” he said.

Spokesperson Enanga also noted that they believe that there could be other extremes of violence against the minor and they are probing the matter.

He also assured that the minor will be taken to an emergency protective shelter where he will receive necessary care.
