Police in Bungoma on Saturday lobbed teargas canisters to disperse traders and local leaders who had gathered at Kanduyi in Bungoma where demolitions were ongoing.

During the melee, three people were injured and taken to Bungoma West Hospital where they were treated and discharged.

Led by Wafula Wamunyinyi and Bungoma businessman Zachary Barasa, the leaders condemned the ongoing demolitions saying they were being done discriminatively targeting ordinary mwananchi while buildings belonging to senior politicians were left untouched.

They said they were not opposed to the demolitions, however opining that they should be done in a humane way and the traders relocated.

The demolitions have now entered the third week as several leaders call for an end to them until pending cases before the courts are determined.
