Police have lobed teargas at protesters in several parts of the country taking part in the anti-government demonstrations called by the opposition.

In Nairobi’s Mathare area, police engaged protesters in running battles and lobbed teargas to disperse crowds that had gathered to picket over the high cost of living.

In Kibera, police also dispersed pockets of demonstrators.

Similar scenes were witnessed in Mombasa and Kisumu cities as well as Migori, Nyamira and Emali towns.

Azimio called for protests on grounds that the Kenya Kwanza government has failed to prioritise the plight of Kenyans and instead instituted punitive taxation laws.

On Tuesday, Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome said the opposition has not presented any official notification to the police on the planned demos, hence the gatherings will be considered illegal.

The IG vowed to use “all lawful means” to disperse any gatherings that will take place on Wednesday.
