Two suspects have been arrested in Makindu, Makueni County, following a late-night intelligence-led operation that uncovered an alleged illegal donkey slaughtering syndicate in Kamboo sub-location.

According to area chief Jackson Kimende, the operation was carried out at about 12:30am, when officers raided a forest site and found that at least 20 donkeys had already been slaughtered.

The chief said several people believed to be involved in the activity fled the scene as officers arrived.

A vehicle suspected to have been used to transport the meat was intercepted as it was being loaded, but the driver escaped.

The chief said the vehicle’s rear number plate had also been removed.
