Officers carried out a raid at a local bar in Ng’othi village, Mwea West Sub-county, on Wednesday, seizing large quantities of suspected counterfeit alcohol.
The bar is alleged to have been manufacturing and distributing illicit liquor within the area.
The operation followed a tip-off from residents who alerted the area Assistant Chief to the suspected illegal activities.
Detectives from Kiamaciri Police Station, accompanied by county government officials, conducted the raid and arrested two employees found at the premises. Officers seized several crates of suspected fake Taifa beer and bottles branded as products from other beer companies.
Mary Nyawira, a local, expressed relief after the closure of the bar.
“My son had been waking up very early to come to this club, sleeping there and engaging in harmful behaviour to get money for drinking,” she said.
Residents also questioned how the bar had operated for so long without detection, given its proximity to local primary and secondary schools.
“This club has been operating near schools. Who licensed it?” asked Peter Kariuki, a resident.
Kirinyaga County Liquor Licensing Board Chairman Maina Kihia confirmed the closure, citing illegal activities at the establishment.
Police said two employees remain in custody as detectives pursue the owner, who is reported to have fled. The seized alcohol has been taken to Kiamaciri Police Station for further investigation.
