Police nab man with huge bhang haul in Nairobi’s Umoja estate

Police officers in Buruburu Sub-County have nabbed a man linked to a huge bhang haul in the Umoja 1 Market area, seizing at least 20 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis.

In a statement released by the National Police Service on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the police revealed that the key person of interest has been on their radar.

“Police officers from the Nairobi Region have arrested a suspected drug peddler and recovered a large quantity of cannabis during an operation in the Umoja 1 Market area, Buruburu Sub-County,” NPS said.

At the time of the arrest, the police further revealed that among the 20 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis confiscated were 3,000 prepared rolls and 33 packages of the substance, which were retained as exhibits.

Police further stated that the person of interest was taken into custody and he awaits arraignment in court.

“During the raid, officers confiscated approximately 20 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis, along with 3,000 prepared rolls and 33 packages of the substance, which were retained as exhibits. The suspect was apprehended and will be arraigned in court,” NPS stated.

According to NPS, the Umoja incident is part of sustained efforts to curb the distribution and abuse of narcotics within the city and across the country. The National Police Service commends the officers involved for their vigilance and commitment to the fight against drugs and illicit alcohol.

Meru bhang haul

This comes even as police officers in Meru intercepted a major drug trafficking attempt after seizing 25 kilograms of cannabis sativa from a public service vehicle.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was conducted following a tip-off that led officers to intercept a Nairobi–Maua-bound matatu with registration number KCS 884N.

In a statement on Monday, October 13, 2025, NPS revealed that the vehicle was stopped and searched thoroughly, leading to the discovery of the drugs concealed in various pieces of luggage.

Further, the NPS revealed that during the search, police found the narcotic substance hidden inside a black suitcase, a black backpack, and a white carrier bag.

According to the NPS, the packages were reportedly being transported discreetly among passenger belongings.

“The driver of the vehicle claimed that the luggage belonged to two of his passengers. The suspects were immediately arrested and taken to Meru Police Station, where they are currently being processed pending arraignment in court,” NPS stated.
