A police officer who was escorting KCSE exam papers to Mahero secondary school in Alego Usonga, Siaya County was killed on Monday morning.
The officer was in the company of his colleague and the centre manager when they were ambushed by unknown assailants with crude weapons.
According to eye witnesses led by Joachim Kombo, the officers had just alighted from a school bus that had ferried them to pick the examination papers from Siaya County headquarters but alighted a few meters away because the bus could not reach the school due to the bad state of the road.
While the centre manager fled for safety, the thugs killed one of the officer and injured the other. The thugs escaped with the officers’ firearms before taking off.
Security personnel rushed to the scene, and took the injured officer to Siaya County Referral Hospital for treatment. The body of the deceased was taken to the hospital’s mortuary.
Siaya County Commissioner Julius Otieno and the County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo who led the security team that visited the scene and picked the injured officer to Siaya County referral hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
While confirming the incident Siaya County Commissioner Julius Otieno called for patience as investigations begin into the matter to establish who the attackers were and what their motive could be but appealed to members of the public to volunteer information that can lead to their arrest.
The KCSE Geography Paper One which was to be done at the school went on successfully after the teacher managed to reach school.
Siaya Deputy County Commissioner Robert Ng’etich has assured that security will be intensified to ensure all the remaining papers are also done uninterrupted.
