A police officer has been arrested after killing his wife, leaving her lifeless body in the house, and going to work as usual.

In a police report filed by his neighbour, the suspect, Constable Maxwell Maina, who used to reside in Railways Police Lines in Eldoret, said she was on her way home when she heard gunshots on Tuesday, November 28, evening from the officer’s house.

She then alerted police, who rushed to the suspect’s house and found the body of his wife lying in a pool of blood.

Police said she had been shot twice in the chest.

“Railways and DCI Soy personnel rushed to the scene and found one Mercy Chebet having been shot twice in the chest and succumbed to injury,” police said.

By then, the husband had returned to the station’s report office and continued to work.

According to the police, Maina had been issued with a scorpion rifle with 30 bullets for escort of trains in the area.

After he was arrested and disarmed, police found that he had spent three bullets in the shooting.

The report further noted that there had been persistent domestic feuds between Maina and Chebet, which is believed to have led to the incident.

The deceased’s body was moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem.

This is not the first incident to happen in the same area. Last month, a police officer who allegedly shot her husband to death was charged with murder after detectives completed investigations into a case where she is suspected of shooting her husband twelve times.

On October 14, 2023, Police Constable Lilian Biwott, attached to the Kenya Bureau of Standards Eldoret branch, allegedly shot her husband twelve times in the chest and head following a long-standing family feud.

The incident was allegedly triggered by a quarrel between the suspect and her husband, the father of their three children.

The shooting took place in their rental house at Kimumu estate on the outskirts of Eldoret town.

She is said to have reported on night duty before returning to her house, where she engaged in squabbles with her estranged husband.

The suspect is suspected to have used the official gun her seniors gave her after she was assigned for official night duties.

A resident living near the couple, who wished to remain anonymous, mentioned that the pair had been entangled in a family dispute ever since they moved to the neighborhood.

Other neighbors reported hearing gunshots following an intense, prolonged altercation between the couple around 11 pm.
