Police have arrested a man who raped a 77-year-old mentally ill grandmother before he went into hiding.

According to the police report, the man identified as 45-year-old Joseph Muema sneaked into the victim’s bedroom in Ikuuni village, Kindaruma sub-location on Tuesday night and committed the act.

Muema was caught in the act by the victim’s son who had gone to check on his mother at around 11 pm

The son’s arrival prompted Muema to escape leading to a chase. He overpower the victim’s son and disappeared into the darkness.

The son immediately reported the matter to the police.

The suspect was arrested in the wee hours of the morning. Police said the manhunt was made easy because the suspect made a terrible blunder as he was fleeing the room after raping the elderly woman.

Police said that a pair of trousers and scandals the suspect left behind made it easier for them to trace him.

“Luckily, the suspect had left behind his pair of trousers and akala (tyre-made sandals), making it easier for the search team to trace him in the wee hours of the morning,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said in a statement.

DCI added that the suspect had gone in hiding in Mwala, Machakos County.

Both the suspect and the victim were escorted to Mbiuni Level Four Hospital where medical tests indeed confirmed that the elderly woman had been raped.

The suspect is currently in custody being processed to face rape charges.
