The National Police Service (NPS) has allayed social media claims that its officers are collaborating with goons to fuel violence amidst the ongoing opposition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition protests.

NPS, in a statement released on Thursday, raised concerns that a section of netizens was propagating the involvement of police in the anti-government demos.

The multi-agency body thus warned the public against such misinformation across social media platforms, warning that it may spread fear or tarnish the image of the men and women in blue in the public domain.

“NPS has noted with serious concern, a lot of propaganda circulating via social media amidst the ongoing Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance demonstrations in Nairobi, the latest being the falsehood that NPS is abetting hired goons to cause mayhem in Nairobi,” read the statement.

“We wish to bring to the attention of the general public that such unfounded and malicious claims are not only intended to cause unnecessary fear in the society but are also deliberate moves meant to tarnish the image of the National Police Service.”

NPS, therefore, reassured the public of its commitment to fairness in serving Kenyans.

“As a law enforcement agency, we wish to reiterate our commitment to discharge our Constitutional mandate which is to serve and protect, without fear or favour, while adhering to the rule of law and utmost respect for human rights,” added the statement.
