Police officers in Meru have intercepted a major drug trafficking attempt after seizing 25 kilograms of cannabis sativa from a public service vehicle.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was conducted following a tip-off that led officers to intercept a Nairobi–Maua-bound matatu with registration number KCS 884N.

In a statement on Monday, October 13, 2025, NPS revealed that the vehicle was stopped and searched thoroughly, leading to the discovery of the drugs concealed in various pieces of luggage.

Further, the NPS revealed that during the search, police found the narcotic substance hidden inside a black suitcase, a black backpack, and a white carrier bag.

According to the NPS, the packages were reportedly being transported discreetly among passenger belongings.

“The driver of the vehicle claimed that the luggage belonged to two of his passengers. The suspects were immediately arrested and taken to Meru Police Station, where they are currently being processed pending arraignment in court,” NPS stated.

“The Service appreciates the timely intelligence shared by members of the public and the quick response by our officers. This success demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the fight against drug trafficking and other illicit activities that threaten the safety and well-being of our communities,” NPS added.

Authorities say the suspects will face charges related to drug possession and trafficking once investigations are complete. Samples of the recovered substance have been sent to the Government Chemist for analysis to confirm its authenticity.

The National Police Service has urged the public to remain vigilant and continue collaborating with law enforcement by providing information that can help curb criminal activity.

“We call upon citizens to report suspicious activities and movements in their areas. Working together with the police is key to keeping our neighborhoods safe and free from the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking,” the Service said.
