Premier League rival sends message to Ruben Amorim over quitting Man Utd

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United future has become one of the most talked-about stories in football this week following their heartbreaking Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Despite leading the Red Devils to a European final in his first season in charge, the defeat has left Amorim considering his position — a scenario that has sparked responses across the Premier League.

Among those stepping forward to support Amorim is Aston Villa manager Unai Emery. Speaking ahead of Villa’s decisive clash with United on the final day of the Premier League season, Emery offered a powerful message of solidarity, insisting Amorim is the right man to lead Manchester United forward.

“Ruben is a great coach,” Emery said. “What he achieved at Sporting Lisbon was remarkable, and now at United, I believe he needs time and support to implement his ideas fully.”

Emery’s comments come at a time when speculation is swirling over Amorim’s future. Following the 2-1 loss in Bilbao, Amorim shocked many by suggesting he would step down if both fans and the board felt his time was up. It was a raw, emotional moment that underscored the pressures of managing a club of United’s stature.

Yet, reports suggest United’s hierarchy has no intention of parting ways with the Portuguese coach. Despite finishing outside the top four and missing out on Champions League qualification, Amorim is seen as part of a long-term project at Old Trafford.

“He’s building something,” Emery added. “United were in three competitions late into the season. That kind of fixture load would challenge any squad. He deserves more time.”

United’s domestic form has certainly raised concerns. Since January, they have managed just four league wins — with three of those coming against relegated teams. Such form has done little to inspire confidence among the fanbase, and with no European football on the horizon, the pressure heading into Sunday’s finale is immense

Villa, meanwhile, are still chasing a Champions League spot. Sitting sixth, they’ll need a win and help from elsewhere to leap into fourth. But regardless of the outcome, their place in Europe is secured — something that can’t be said for United.

Emery admitted that Villa have historically struggled against United, especially at Old Trafford. “I’ve never beaten them there,” he noted. “But we respect them — the players, the club, and the coach. The greatness of Manchester United hasn’t disappeared.”

That greatness is exactly what Amorim is trying to reignite. The former Sporting Lisbon boss was brought in to revolutionize United’s tactical identity, instill discipline, and rejuvenate the squad. And while the process has seen stumbles, many in the game — including rivals like Emery — see the bigger picture.

“It’s easy to judge based on one result,” Emery said. “But look at the progress. United reached a European final. That’s not nothing.”

Despite the disappointment in Bilbao, there have been positive signs under Amorim. The emergence of young talent, tactical versatility, and a clearer identity are all indicators that the project is moving in the right direction — albeit slower than fans would like.

Jamie Carragher recently suggested a clean break might be best, hinting that Amorim’s methods may not align with United’s culture. However, Emery’s strong endorsement provides a different perspective — one that advocates patience and faith in the managerial process.

The final game against Villa may not decide Amorim’s fate, but it will serve as a litmus test for the mood around Old Trafford. A strong performance could reinforce support, while another setback may reignite calls for change.

In any case, the message from Emery is clear: Ruben Amorim deserves time. In a sport often obsessed with instant results, that sentiment is both refreshing and necessary.

Whether Amorim remains at the helm come August or not, his impact on United’s evolution — and the respect he commands among his peers — is undeniable.

The next chapter in this story begins on Sunday at Old Trafford. Whatever happens, the Premier League will be watching.
