President William Ruto has extended his congratulations to Paul Kagame following his landslide reelection for another term as Rwanda’s president.
“I am pleased to extend my warmest congratulations on your reelection to serve another term as President of the Republic of Rwanda,” Ruto conveyed.
He celebrated the Rwandan people’s sovereign choice and expressed his best wishes for Kagame’s success in leading the nation forward.
“We celebrate alongside you the democratic choice made by the people of Rwanda and wish you success as you continue guiding your country towards peace, stability, and prosperity,” Ruto remarked.
“I anticipate our continued collaboration in regional and Pan-African affairs to strengthen the bonds of solidarity and fraternity between the peoples of Kenya and Rwanda,” he added.
According to partial results released by Rwanda’s National Electoral Commission, Kagame secured 99.15% of the votes counted, with a total of 7,099,810 votes. His nearest competitor, Habineza Frank, received 38,301 votes, while Mfayimana Philippe garnered 22,753 votes.
Kagame, who has led Rwanda since 2000, has been a dominant figure in Rwandan politics since his rebel forces ended the 1994 genocide, which claimed the lives of around 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus. He has consistently won elections with over 90% of the vote, achieving a resounding 99% in 2017.
