President William Ruto has congratulated His Holiness Pope Leo XIV following his historic election as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

In an official statement released on Thursday, President Ruto praised the new Pope’s ascension as a moment of spiritual significance not only for Catholics worldwide but for humanity at large.

“Congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on your election as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church,” President Ruto said. “May your papacy be a shining light of love, hope, and compassion; may it uplift the poor, give voice to the voiceless, heal divisions, and steadfastly champion peace, justice, and the sanctity of human dignity around the world.”

The President added, “May your leadership inspire faith, unity, and moral renewal today and for generations to come.”

Robert Francis Prevost became the first pope from the United States on Thursday, picking the papal name Leo XIV after cardinals from around the world elected him leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

Tens of thousands of people packed in St Peter’s Square cheered as Prevost appeared on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, waving with both hands, smiling and bowing.
