Kenyan athletes who earned medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics have received cash rewards from the government, as announced by President William Ruto. During a welcoming ceremony for the Kenyan winners at the Eldoret State Lodge on Thursday, Ruto commended the team for their historic accomplishments and for proudly representing the nation on the global stage.
Gold medalists Beatrice Chebet (10,000 and 5,000 meters), Faith Kipyegon (1,500 meters), and Emmanuel Wanyonyi (800 meters) each received Ksh. 3 million. Faith Kipyegon and Ronald Kwemoi, who secured silver in the 5,000-meter race, were awarded Ksh. 2 million. Bronze medalists Mary Moraa (800m), Abraham Kibiwott (Steeplechase), Faith Cherotich (Steeplechase), Benson Kipruto (marathon), and Hellen Obiri (marathon) each received Ksh. 1 million.
Kenya ranked 17th among countries in terms of Olympic medals and was the top country in Africa. President Ruto emphasized that his administration is committed to enhancing facilities for athlete wellness and improving the country’s performance in future competitions.
“I am looking forward to expanding the sports infrastructure, and I want to encourage not only the government, but also the private sector,” he stated.
Regarding the doping issue, he stated, “We must deal with it firmly, decisively so that it does not undermine our great talent as a country.”
