Three female academics at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (UEAB) have earned promotions to higher academic ranks after surpassing the institution’s research and publication requirements, the university announced on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The promotions, which were ratified at a council meeting on August 23, 2026, were shared publicly on the university’s Facebook page, drawing attention to the trio’s contributions to research, teaching and professional development.
UEAB’s Education Department Gains Two Senior Lecturers
Dr. Dorcas Mukami Gitonga and Dr. Jane Genga Ayemba, both based in the Department of Education, were elevated from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer. Dr. Gitonga accumulated 32 publication points from refereed journals, exceeding the minimum threshold of 24, and recorded 38 total publication points since her last promotion against a required minimum of 32. Dr. Ayemba similarly cleared both benchmarks, logging 30.66 refereed journal points and 32.66 total publication points, just above the required floor of 32.
The two promotions reflect sustained academic output over time, with both women building research portfolios strong enough to meet UEAB’s competitive internal criteria. Accounting Department Welcomes New Lecturer In the Department of Accounting, Dr. Sharon Jepkosgei Waley was elevated from Tutorial Fellow to Lecturer. Her promotion came on the back of 28 publication points from refereed journals, well above the minimum of 16, and 30 total publication points against a required threshold of 24.
The step from Tutorial Fellow to Lecturer marks a significant career milestone in Kenyan academic circles, as it signals a transition from a supporting role in teaching to full academic standing with independent research responsibilities.
The Office of the Vice-Chancellor issued the formal press release confirming all three promotions, describing them as a reflection of dedication to academic excellence and professional growth.
