Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) is urging customers to update their prepaid meters by the August 31 deadline to prevent service disruptions. This reminder follows a campaign launched in mid-June, which encouraged all prepaid users to upgrade their meter software to maintain uninterrupted electricity access.

Kenya Power’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, commented, “We appreciate the positive response to the update initiative and thank those who have already completed it. We have scheduled updates for all prepaid meters and urge those who haven’t yet updated to do so before the deadline to avoid service interruptions.”

To update their meters, customers need to purchase at least one unit of electricity and enter the codes sent in the token SMS. Kenya Power will then send two codes via SMS: a reset code and an updated code. The update process is free of charge.

Customers should ensure that all previous tokens are loaded into their meters before beginning the update. If the update is not completed by the deadline, the meter will no longer accept new electricity tokens.

This update is part of a global effort to standardize prepaid meters using the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), which aims to enhance token security. Dr. Siror added, “The phased approach has managed customer demand and reduced system delays, simplifying token purchases and update code receipt.”

For issues with the SMS platform, customers can reach out to the company’s self-service platform by dialing *977.
