Police have launched investigations into the theft of firearms and ammunition from Maguguni Patrol Base in Thika early Tuesday morning.

According to a police report on the incident, the theft was discovered by Corporal Simon Cheboi, the officer on duty at the night report office, who noticed suspicious activity around 4 am on October 29, 2025.

Cheboi reportedly heard dogs barking near the patrol base compound and the neighbouring A.I.P.C.A. Church, prompting him to conduct a patrol in the area.

Upon returning to the report office, he claimed to have noticed that one of the iron sheets covering the armoury had been removed.

The officer says he further discovered that the padlock to the armoury door was broken and that inside he found the steel box used to store weapons open, with several firearms and rounds of ammunition missing.

The missing weapons include an AK-47 rifle with two fully loaded magazines containing 60 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and a G3 rifle with one fully loaded magazine of 20 rounds, two empty magazines, and an additional 96 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

Senior police officers, including the Sub-County Police Commander (SC-PC) and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SC-CIO) for Thika East, visited the scene and confirmed the incident. Crime Scene Investigators from Thika West also documented the scene.

Interestingly, preliminary findings suggest there were no signs of forced entry, and both armoury padlocks were found intact—raising questions about how the weapons were accessed and removed.

“A search party was deployed in a bid to recover the stolen arms and ammunition. Preliminary investigations revealed there was no breaking and the two armoury padlocks were intact and not broken,” reads the police report.

Cpl. Simon Cheboi has been placed in custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
