Margaret Gati is determined to win a medal for Kenya as the sole walker at next week’s Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon.
Despite the challenge of competing alone in such a significant championship, Gati expressed confidence in her mental preparedness to face competitors from across the continent.
“It’s a really good feeling that I will be flying the country’s flag in the 20km walk in Cameroon. However, this being my first time in the senior category, It will be a good challenge,” she noted.
Gati said she has been consulting the experienced Kenyan walkers including Emily Ngii and hopes to ride on their tips to win a medal for Kenya.
“It’s always good when you are more than two because you tend to encourage each other. In this case, I am alone but I hope for the best,” she said.
Three-time Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) champion Margaret Gati is among the 59 athletes (26 female and 33 male) selected by Athletics Kenya to represent the country at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon.
The week-long event will take place from June 21-26. Gati, a Form Four student at Cheptonon High School in Nandi County, stated that her participation in the National Athletics Championships at Ulinzi Stadium has prepared her well for her debut in the senior continental championships.
“I have featured in continental events as a junior and I can’t wait for the Cameroon show,” she said.
