Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda criticized Governor Fernandes Barasa’s development record yesterday, accusing him of reversing the progress made by his predecessor, Wycliffe Oparanya. She claimed that nearly all projects initiated by Oparanya and left incomplete when he left office have stalled, and those that were completed are now neglected due to lack of maintenance.
“There are no drugs or essential equipment in nearly all our health facilities across the county. Roads are in a deplorable state. It’s a shame,” she added. Muhanda also highlighted that many county staff are demoralized due to delayed salaries and allowances.
She accused the county government of rampant corruption, alleging that the governor and his associates are focusing on amassing wealth at the expense of development. Muhanda, who is vying for the governorship, claimed that Barasa has demeaned her based on her gender.
“He talks about a woman wearing ‘shibunguyi’. Is it a crime for women to wear panties? Doesn’t he have a wife?” she questioned. Speaking in Kakamega, the MP expressed her confidence in becoming the first woman governor in the Western region.
