A suspected livestock thief was lynched and set on fire by angry residents in Kiamwaki village, Kiaga, Kirinyaga County, on Sunday. The man was confronted when a neighbor raised the alarm after discovering him untying his cow in the shed.
Residents believe the suspect was part of a cattle theft ring that operates in coordination with individuals suspected to be butchers from nearby markets, including Kerugoya, Baricho, Kutus, and Kagio. “We believe the suspected livestock thieves have ready markets in this region,” said area resident Joseph Kinyua.
Reports indicate that these unidentified individuals have been raiding homes and farms late at night, stealing cows, chickens, and farm produce.
Kanyekiine location chief Gilbert Karimi has cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands. He urged them to collaborate with the administration to address their grievances rather than resorting to violence against suspects. “The man’s remains have been taken to the Kerugoya Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem,” the chief added.
