Concerns have been raised over the apathy displayed by some residents of Migori, who continue to risk their lives by crossing the busy Migori-Isibania highway instead of using the newly built footbridge. The footbridge, constructed by Migori County, is located at a critical intersection near the local market, bus stand, Migori Primary School, and Migori Teachers Training College.
This location is notorious for heavy congestion and frequent fatal accidents, which have claimed lives and left many pedestrians injured. However, despite the availability of the footbridge, many residents avoid using it, continuing to cross the road at the dangerous intersection.
Road users have urged authorities to step up public education on road safety and enforce the use of the footbridge. “From my observation, only one out of ten people uses the footbridge, despite the heavy traffic and fast-moving vehicles,” said James Odongo, a resident of Migori Township.
James Likari, the chairman of the boda boda association, called on teachers, particularly those at Migori Primary School, to take a stronger role in educating pupils about safe crossing. He added that despite the footbridge, an average of four accidents occur every week in the area.
