The education community mourns the loss of Madam Lizzie Wanyoike, the esteemed founder of the Nairobi Institute of Business Studies (NIBS), Emory Hotel, and Lizzie Preparatory Schools, who passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2024, after a brave battle with cancer.

She was 73 years old.

A family member confirmed the sad news to the press, highlighting her significant role not only in the realm of education but also as a founder of prominent establishments such as the Emory Hotel and Lizzie Preparatory Schools.

“In loving memory of a remarkable educator. Her passion ignited minds, her kindness touched hearts. A beacon of wisdom, she left an indelible mark on countless lives, shaping futures with grace,” read her heartfelt eulogy.

Lizzie Wanyoike, born in Murang’a County in the 1950s, was the sixth of ten siblings in a humble family.

Raised by a village chief father and a devoted housewife mother, Lizzie overcame financial challenges to pursue education. She attended Gathuki-ini Primary School in Wathenge, Murang’a County, before graduating from Kahuhia Girls High School in Karuri, Murang’a County, with a High School Diploma.

Her academic journey continued at Kenyatta University College (now Kenyatta University), where she earned a Diploma in Education, laying the foundation for her lifelong commitment to empowering others through knowledge.

Following personal trials, including a divorce, Lizzie Wanyoike founded the Temple College of Secretarial Studies in Nairobi.

Her dedication to mentoring young girls and ensuring their access to education led her to establish the Nairobi Institute of Business Studies.

With initial savings of Ksh6 million and a loan of Ksh4 million, she transformed NIBS from a modest beginning with 25 students to a thriving institution boasting over 6,000 students today, with branches in Ongata Rongai, Thika Town, Nairobi CBD, and Ruiru-Kimbo along Thika Highway.

Condolences have poured in from various quarters, with Hon. William Kabogo expressing deep sorrow, stating:

“Liz was not just a great businesswoman but a source of inspiration for many. Her legacy and impact will always be remembered.”

CS Moses Kuria also mourned her passing, recognizing her as an educational icon whose contributions to the sector will endure.
