Nation Media Group journalist Rukia Bulle has been named the 2024 winner of the Komla Dumor Award.
The human interest journalist is the ninth recipient of the award since it was established in 2015 and the third Kenyan journalist to earn this prestigious honor, following in the footsteps of Waihiga Mwaura (2018) and Victoria Rubadiri (2020).
The award is given in memory of journalist Komla Dumor, and the 2024 edition marks the 10th anniversary of the Ghanaian journalist’s death.
The BBC stated that the judges were particularly impressed by Rukia’s resilience, her ability to tackle challenging stories, her focus on amplifying under-represented voices, and her strong on-air presence.
The panel of judges for the 2024 award included Ehizojie Okharedia (Senior News Editor, BBC World Service), Magnus McGrandle (Senior News Editor, BBC News Channels), and Lydia Namubiru (Editor-in-Chief, The Continent).
Rukia is currently a reporter for NTV.
Winners of the Komla Dumor Award spend three months working with BBC news teams in London across television, radio, and online platforms. They also have the opportunity to enhance their journalism skills through training, workshops, and mentorship with leading BBC journalists.
Additionally, successful candidates are given the chance to travel to an African country to report on a story they identify and research, which will be featured in BBC’s content for a global audience.
Applications for the 2024 award closed on March 15, 2024, at 23:59 GMT (2:59 am EAT).
