Rural private hospitals to start charging NHIF beneficiaries

The Rural Private Hospital Association of Kenya (RUPHA) has announced measures to address persistent challenges in receiving payments from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

In an official statement released on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, RUPHA announced a series of modifications to the access to healthcare services for NHIF beneficiaries, with these changes set to take effect from December 20, 2023.

RUPHA said that NHIF patients seeking outpatient care will now be obligated to pay a fee amounting to Ksh1,000.

The association also noted that NHIF patients requiring admission for medical cases will be requested to pay an admission fee.

According to RUPHA, NHIF beneficiaries in need of surgery will be requested to pay a theatre fee.

Additionally, NHIF patients receiving cancer care will be requested to pay consultation fees, laboratory testing fees, and procedure fees for any interventions.

RUPHA also said that patients enrolled in the Linda Mama scheme will be required to pay a procedure fee for normal delivery and a theatre fee for a Caesarean section.

The association clarified that member facilities would continue to attend to NHIF beneficiaries in emergency and critical situations without imposing any changes to the current process.
