In a telephone conversation with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ruto expressed concern over the plight of Kenyan citizens who may have been misled or coerced into joining the conflict. He said both leaders agreed to raise awareness about the dangers of such illegal recruitment schemes that target unsuspecting young people.
“I have requested President Zelensky to facilitate the release of any Kenyan in Ukrainian custody. I am grateful to His Excellency for acceding to my appeal,” President Ruto said.
President Ruto also commended President Zelensky for the upcoming Ukraine Food Summit, which is set to take place later this month, and expressed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
In a statement issued from Kyiv, President Zelensky confirmed the discussion, noting that he had briefed President Ruto on Russia’s continued attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. He expressed appreciation for Kenya’s support and solidarity with Ukraine.
“We touched upon the issue of Russia’s recruitment of foreign citizens into its criminal war. We are aware of the fraudulent methods being used and will work closely with Kenya to put an end to them,” said President Zelensky.
