Ruto defends decision to include Uhuru allies in Cabinet

President William Ruto has broken his silence over Cabinet changes he made three days ago, which saw allies of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated to join his cabinet, saying the move is aimed at transforming the country.

Speaking in Uasin Gishu County on Sunday when he attended a church service, Ruto explained the journey to yet another handshake, months after his previous one with his political nemesis, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

It was the first time President Ruto referred to the changes three days after he included Uhuru’s supposed foot soldiers in his list of new Cabinet nominees.

“Tulianza kama serikali ya Kenya Kwanza. Hapo katikati tukakuwa na mambo mengi. Hata juzi nilipanua tena serikali na wengine nikawaingiza. Ndiyo tulete umoja na maelewano,” he said.

The president, who has come under a barrage of criticism for crippling the opposition and employing a divide-and-rule tactic, said the changes aimed at building bridges and effecting the transformation of the nation without regard to political competition.

“Lengo letu si mashindano; ni transformation ya Wakenya. Tutatekeleza yale mambo yatakayolete ajira, pesa, na high quality of life,” he said.

Further, Ruto said he would soldier on and continue defending government projects, including the now contentious mass livestock vaccination exercise set to be rolled out in just about two weeks.

“Nothing will stop us from transforming this country… Hii mambo ya chanjo, tuache porojo, propaganda, na uongo,” he said.

The president also made a donation of Ksh.5 million and pledged to purchase seats for the AIC Kipkorgot Church in Ainabkoi Constituency, even as he slowly walks back on his directive to stop contributions and politics at the pulpit.
