Deputy President nominee Kithure Kindiki welcomed President William Ruto at the Kwale County Commissioner’s office ahead of the 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations.
Images shared by Citizen Digital show Kindiki receiving President Ruto as he disembarked from a Kenya Airforce chopper with First Lady Rachel Ruto on Sunday morning. Kindiki was accompanied by Trade Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Olollo, and Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani.
President Ruto is expected to head to the Kwale County stadium, where he will lead the celebrations.
Kindiki was nominated to be Kenya’s Deputy President following the Senate’s impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. On October 17, 2024, senators voted in favor of five out of the 11 charges presented for his removal.
Gachagua, who has been admitted to the Karen Hospital in Nairobi since Thursday, October 17, is still recovering. Doctors had initially informed the press that his hospital stay would last 48 to 72 hours for monitoring. However, a court order has suspended the Senate’s impeachment decision, delaying Kindiki’s assumption of the Deputy President’s office.
Meanwhile, Gachagua joined Kenyans in commemorating the celebrations on X, writing, “Happy Mashujaa Day dear Kenyans. God bless our nation.”
