Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has stated that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is open to forming a government of national unity with the Kenya Kwanza administration to promote peace in Kenya.
Speaking to reporters in Kisumu on Sunday, Oburu expressed support for the aspirations of the younger generation but cautioned against the “Ruto must go” calls, warning they could lead to instability.
Oburu emphasized discomfort with the prospect of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua assuming leadership, citing past statements about being a “shareholder.” He argued that if President William Ruto were ousted, Gachagua would likely take over. Oburu acknowledged that Azimio affiliate parties could opt out of proposed dialogues if unwilling.
The Senator noted ODM’s self-interest in furthering its agenda and expressed skepticism toward Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s initial support for dialogue. According to Oburu, a unity government would ensure all Kenyans benefit equitably from national resources.
Regarding the National Dialogue, initiated during the signing of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) (Amendment) Bill, 2024 on July 9, President William Ruto announced a six-day multi-sectoral forum starting on July 15.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga endorsed the dialogue as a crucial step toward resolving national crises, emphasizing it as an opportunity for people to voice concerns and propose solutions.
As of now, parties have yet to nominate members to the dialogue committee, as outlined by Ruto, which will comprise representatives from political parties, religious groups, civil society, employers, and youth organizations.
