KANU political affairs Secretary Fred Okang’o believes it would be a noble move for President William Ruto to postpone his upcoming Nyanza tour and visit insecure Sondu town on the border of Kisumu and Kericho counties.

According to Okang’o, it is necessary that President Ruto visit the area, especially as tension continues to soar following the deaths of three people during a Tuesday night raid.

He proposed that the president should tag along the state security agencies to assure residents living in the area of their safety.

“If for sure the National Government believes in securing the lives of Kenyans all over then this is just an instance. If anything he should fly there with his security team and address this issue because no one would want to see death in this country,” he said speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak show.

His sentiments were, however, dismissed by Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi who propounded that Ruto should not abort his visit but instead visit both regions concurrently.

In Murungi’s view, Ruto missing out on the planned visit might insinuate that he is favouring one community over the other and he needs to administer his role as the national leader.

He also proposed that security forces and leadership in the counties should hold meetings to help restore calm in the area.

“Actually this is the time he (Ruto) should go to Kisumu so that he can assure the people in that region that nobody is targeting the Luo community,” he said.

“He should also go to that border if it is possible so that he can address the community. The president is in charge of the whole country.”

Ruto is scheduled to visit the four counties in Nyanza from tomorrow, Friday, where he will launch projects on road development, blue economy and information and communication technology sectors.
